Skin
tests will be performed in many instances to determine if, and to what,
you or your child may be allergic. Skin testing remains the most rapid,
cost efficient, sensitive and reliable method of making the diagnosis
of allergies. Two types of skin tests are used: one type is performed
on the back (most common) and the other is done on the arms (less
common). Both types of tests are relatively painless. Children,
especially young children, may be frightened of the test. Being honest
with them by saying, "the test may sting and itch like a mosquito
bite", usually calms their fears. Skin testing can often be
accomplished in one visit, although sometimes more than one visit is
required.
